Thanks to Berita Harian for featuring our fearless director Mahfuz Mazlan:

Headline: Director accepts the huge challenge of updating the look of “Cantik Detektif” by Hayani Ismail

Director Mahfuz Mazlan has been associated with ‘heavy’ dramas such as Bidadari or futuristic dramas such as Dystopia . Prior to this, he directed the comedy drama Baba Papa The Series.

However, when given the task of refreshing the info-ed show Cantik Detektif (aka Beauty Detective), mostly watched by women, Mahfuz, 49 years old, was not worried and accepted the challenge to travel with the crew and its host Huda Ali.

So far, they have already traveled to Kyoto & Osaka, Japan; Luang Prabang, Laos and Chiang Mai, Thailand.

This is the fifth season of Cantik Detektif which started around 10 years ago. It paused for 5 years due to Covid-19. Huda was also pregnant and gave birth to her second child, Luke Qalish.

When contacted by Berita Minggu (BM), Mahfuz said: “I actually directed a part of Cantik Detectif (Season 4). This time, Khim Loh of The Moving Visuals Co., entrusted me with the task of changing and updating Cantik Detektif which rated highly. Although this program is relaxed, it is challenging to bring changes to a series that has been introduced to the audience for a long time and has its own following. I’m trying to bring a new concept by maintaining the ‘feel’ or soul that many viewers are aware of about programs tracking treatments, practices and beauty and health therapies across the country.”

According to him, since Huda is a host with a sense of humour, Mahfuz can use his experience directing comedy dramas for Cantik Detektif .

“The whole face of this program will be changed without disturbing its ‘feel’. I thought of a big idea that I had never explored before. It’s like a drama in the past and in ancient times like period drama ,” he shared.

Mahfuz gave an overview of the journey of the Cantik Detectif team far away with plans to reach the Hawaiian islands. Previously, this program had been to Finland and New Zealand which are considered destinations that Singaporeans usually visit.  For Mahfuz, he emphasizes cinematography and also capturing elements that are commonly used in casual travelogues.

“It’s easy to direct Huda because she’s funny and candid. Hopefully, this season will attract more viewers to the show, ” he said.
