Helio Gracie – the man who helped make Brazilian Jiu-jitsu the foundation of today’s mixed martial arts passed away on Thursday, January 29 2009. We filmed Helio in his ranch in Itaipava, Rio de Janiero in 2003 for our landmark martial arts series Go Warrior. While there, we captured Helio sparring in action with son Royler. At 90, he was a remarkable fighter who still had the strength to handle men a quarter of his age. Incredible. Host Roland Osborne was in awe – as were we.

We thank son Royler Gracie for the unique opportunity to meet a remarkable man, and the chance to capture some amazing footage. Helio’s remarkable discipline towards diet and exercise kept him strong till the end.
