The Ugly Side of Beauty wins a Silver trophy at the 2023 Deauville Green Awards which honours films on sustainable development. The show was honoured in the Conscious Consumption and Eco-label category for uncovering the human cost behind the mining of a key cosmetics ingredient.
“Thanks to the judges and organisers for this award, and all who worked on it – Sumitra Gopal, Deepak Bara, and the broadcaster CNA. We set out to make a film about mining but ended up learning much more in our journey. The mineral called Mica is not high on the value chain of many conflict minerals, but it is still used by cars, cosmetics and construction industries the world over. In India, we were happy to know that the groups featured in the documentary have organised talks and screenings with this film as they felt they were given a voice on a very overlooked issue. Make no mistake, the challenges of poverty, environmental stewardship and better working conditions still need to be addressed – and ensuring ethical mining still has a long way to go. Greenwashing remains an easy way out for big brands, but the best way is to make more videos in the mainstream to address these issues and hopefully create action. We thank the Deauville Festival for their aim in focussing on these important topics.”– Galen Yeo, Creative Director
