Who is Ryan Hong – the Chef for Hire?

By tmvcadm | Bios, Shows | 6 comments | 16 January, 2009 | 0

CHEF FOR HIRE airs on Mediacorp 5 Weds at 9 pm from 21 Jan 2009.   Featuring Ryan Hong, it has the honour of being the first primetime cooking show on Channel 5 in years.   The channel has run successful food series including our Table for 3; Food Chain and Slurp! but this is a bona-fide show about how to make food.

But who exactly is Ryan, and how did we find him?  This is a brief “official” bio for those of you curious to know more on the man:

Ryan Hong spent most of his years abroad, from a UK boarding school to a Master’s degree in Engineering Hydrology from London’s prestigious Imperial College.  Despite this formal education and a career in his family’s business, he has always enjoyed cooking.  After returning from San Francisco in 2007, he was ready for a new start.  Little did he know where his passion soon would lead him.

How it happened was either a stroke of genius or just plain luck – as Ryan was asked to cook for a surprise dinner for a close friend. This was, in fact, his first “gig.”  From that dinner, spawned 3 more dinners, and from those, spawned many others. He was invited to be a guest chef at a charity dinner for 400. The rest is history, and Ryan’s hobby has now become his profession.  He can now be found hunting down the best ingredients and creating new menus for his special dinners which span up to several courses.

His TV debut happened by chance.  At a dinner, the sister of a TV producer exclaimed; “You’re so funny, you should be on television!” Again, fate intervened, and Ryan found himself cooking and talking about food in front of a camera – an extension of what he normally does anyway.

Ryan may be all laughs, but is dead serious about his food, his wine and his cutlery.  Describing his cooking as “a form of modern European,” the range of food he appreciates is in turn, extremely diverse. One will often see this self-confessed Chinaman at off-the-beaten-track local joints, frequented by Singaporeans, tucking into a bowl of noodles. He says, “even though my style of food is Western, you can learn from all cultures!”

Inspiration for Ryan comes from everywhere.  His ever expanding menu is derived from his many experiences in different countries. Parts of his cuisine are derived from very early childhood memories from England.  And he loves wandering around markets smelling and checking out ingredients.

At the present moment, Ryan is a true Bespoke Chef for Hire.  Besides organising private dining events for clients, he is working on his restaurant consultancy (coming soon!); food writing and reviews; and now, media work. Torn between his ambition of running his own restaurant someday with the flexibility his present profession offers him, Ryan admits: “It might be a matter of time, but right now, I’m real happy!”

He says: “So, I’m now a private chef. The thing is, I’ve never worked so hard for so little money!  But I’ve also never been more proud of what I have created! It’s a barrel of laughs.”

Wilfred Oh, Animator of The Moving Visuals Co. Logo Passes Away

By tmvcadm | General | 0 comment | 5 January, 2009 | 0

On Friday, 2 Jan 2009 – Wilfred Oh, a friend and designer passed away. He was 42 years old.

Wilfred was responsible for designing and animating our iconic 3D logo for The Moving Visuals Co which has sustained us for the past 10 years. Needless to say, the company would not be where it is today without his contribution.

Unfortunately, Wilfred was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease a few years ago. This is the same disease that Chinese actor Chew Chor Meng is now afflicted with. While it’s probably one of the most difficult diseases that one has to live with, Wilfred did his best to live his life and fight against the inevitable.

We wish Wilfred and his surviving family members well.

Thank you Wilfred.

Our New Site & Logo

By tmvcadm | Website | 0 comment | 1 December, 2008 | 0

In case some of you are wondering (or not) – we have a new logo and new site up.  After 10 years we decided it was time for a refresh.  Our classic logo is what most people remember us for, and it still served as the inspiration for us moving forward.

Our original moving gear logo was created by Wilfred Oh and Anderson Woon, in a small company called Render Pictures some 9 years ago.  So hats off to them for making it happen and shaping a crucial part of our identity.

The website is still scaling up as we type and will have our full portfolio, loads of reels and interesting news about the work we do – shortly!  As they say in the movies, COMING SOON.

TMVC 2008 Show Round-Up

By tmvcadm | Shows | 0 comment | 24 November, 2008 | 0

2008 was another fruitful and busy year. We celebrated our 10th year in production in October, and completed 36 different productions and 148 different episodes of series; specials; promos and more. Diverse is a word that we use to describe our output and this year was no exception. From capturing fashionistas to food; reality to re-enactments – we covered a lot of ground in 365 days.

Among our highlights:

ANCIENT CHINESE SPORTS
To commemorate the 2008 Beijing Olympics, we produced this tribute to the forgotten world of Chinese sports. Everyone knows about Chinese martial arts, but did you know that the Chinese created football as well? This was our biggest and most epic production to date, filmed on HD in China, Hong Kong and Singapore and featuring a cast of hundreds. This one-hour special premiered on the History Channel Asia, UK and Latin America; aired across China on CCTV 6 and Korea on KBS; screened at SXSW in Austin Texas, and is now in worldwide distribution by Terranoa.

SINGAPORE RACING LEGEND
On the eve of the World’s First Formula One Night Race, we premiered another fast and furious production that saluted the heroes of Singapore’s Grand Prix. Directed by Kenny Png for Mediacorp 5.

GROOM MY SCHOOL
After the hugely successful Groom My Room series, the producers evolved the show bigger and better for an entire school – well almost. The series debuts 2009 on Okto’s kids belt.

DISNEY INTERSTITIALS
If you tuned into the Disney Channel SE Asia this year, you might have seen some of our work. It was another exciting year with Disney and we filmed some cool interstitials and promos across Asia in Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.  Highlights included: PASS THE PLATE shot on HD for Disney’s global campaign; HIDDEN TALENTS and a HANNAH MONTANA campaign.

SPG TV
Our ongoing travel series for Starwood’s in-house channel saw us filming in New Zealand, Mumbai, Bali, Brunei and Kota Kinabalu.  We also completed a PSA for Starwood’s UNICEF efforts in Bangladesh. Tune in at any Starwood hotel in the Asia Pacific region to watch: St Regis; Sheraton; Westin; Le Meredien and Four Points.

SLURP!
The deliciously manic Tan Kheng Hua made her return with The Moving Visuals Co. in her fourth series on food. Following 2 seasons of Food Chain and Table for Three, SLURP made its debut. Looking at drinks and all permutations thereof, this was another entertaining and informative series.

FASHION FORWARD
Our return to the fashion scene hosted by model Rebecca Tan, featured fashion news and a weekly makeover helmed by stylist Marcus AC. The show was produced for Mediacorp 5.

ASEAN Video plays at World Economic Forum
In Jan 2008, TMVC was commissioned by ASEAN (Association of SE Asian Nations) to do a presentation video for the World Economic Forum. Watch the video and read about it here.

MY GUARDIAN ANGEL
This Chinese series featuring people and their real life Guardian Angels was well received by the press and public alike. These dramatic and poignant stories showed how Angels helped to change the lives of those in need.

BIRTHDAY PALS
This novel series looks at 2 different individuals who share the same birthday and the different lives they lead.
